Hypnosis Training for Professionals in the UK

I trained with Cal Banyan in the summer to teach his 5-PATH® Hypnosis and 7-Path Self Hypnosis® here in the UK and Europe. I am really excited at bringing this Advanced system to the UK.

I became a Hypnotherapist in the first few years of this century studying at The Cambridge College of Hypnotherapy here in the UK – I started seeing clients and was excited every time someone called – it was a learning curve and I soon realised that the basic knowledge I had needed to grow. I went on many courses and it was a further 3 years until I came across 5-PATH® Hypnosis through a friend – I was hooked into a system which could help 99% of my clients – I went out to the USA and was trained by Cal Banyan. I saw my income double overnight – I had more confidence, more knowledge and was giving clients exactly what they wanted – good value help (I was the most expensive in the area!) – I had what I was looking for – success, a system and I was welcomed into the 5-PATH® community – I was no longer a one man band!

I see this system as a structure to which I can attach some of my previous and subsequent learning’s – I find it easier to see my 8 clients a day and feel good at the end of the day – something I have heard other trained Hypnosis professionals are unable to teach.

For 3-4 years I have been playing with the idea of training as a CPHI (Certified Professional Hypnosis Instructor – I was not ready – however this year with over 1000 clients treated with 5-PATH® I trained with Cal Banyan and about to teach my first course.

Last weekend I went to the APHP (Association for Professional Hypnosis and Psychotherapy) Annual Conference in London and was asked – ‘if you have the best system why are you here?’ I answered easily – ‘Yes, I have one of the busiest UK Hypnosis Centres however to be the best I have to keep up with training and I would never be arrogant and say there is nothing new to learn’.

I will be teaching both 5-PATH® Hypnosis and 7-Path Self Hypnosis® here in the UK and Europe – I have enquiries from further afield so in this instance – the world is my oyster!

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Is A Leading Edge Career

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Is A Leading Edge Career

Calvin D. Banyan, MA, BCH, CI

Hypnotherapis Cal BanyanWhat is hypnotherapy? When a professional uses hypnosis to help people make healthy changes in their lives, he or she is doing hypnotherapy. The Hypnotherapist takes on a role similar to the Physical Therapist or the Occupational Therapist, often working independently or with professionals from fields such as medicine and psychology.

Is Hypnotherapy A "Stand-Alone" Profession Or Only A Particular Kind of Therapy?
The use of hypnosis in medicine was first approved and recognized by the American Medical Association in 1958. Now it is becoming a leading edge profession that is helping people accomplish their goals for health, sports, business, and much more. Often hypnotherapy is found to be effective when more traditional therapies have had no significant affect.

At present, hypnotherapy can be considered a stand-alone profession where hypnotherapists work independently with their clients. It is also a profession that provides a service that is complementary to almost any other human endeavor (i.e., medicine, psychology, counseling, education and sports enhancement). Did you know that many Olympic teams use hypnotherapists? Did you know that some major league baseball teams use hypnotherapists to get their valued players out of a slump? Did you know that one of the fastest growing areas in hypnotherapy is in the area of natural childbirth?

Who Should and Perhaps Should Not Use Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy?
The Hypnotherapist is the only professional who is trained to work directly with the subconscious and unconscious levels of the mind. This allows for astonishing successes when conventional attempts have failed. Hypnotherapy can be highly effective in helping people overcome problems which cannot be helped directly through working with the conscious mind. Emotions originate in parts of the mind that are not under the control of the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for issues that have an emotional component. Areas where this can be of vital importance are addiction, chronic illness, chronic pain, self-esteem, relationship issues, repressed memories, motivation, phobias, stress management and more. In all of these cases, reducing or removing painful emotions can be an important aspect in the successful treatment.

As you can see by the list, hypnotherapy is usually used by normal everyday people with normal everyday problems. Hypnosis is less commonly used by mental health professionals who work with people who have been diagnosed as suffering from a mental illness. The use of hypnotherapy in treating people who are mentally ill is still in the early stages. More research needs to be done in the area of working with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and sever mood disorders.

Hypnosis and Science
Significant research is occurring at universities around the world, demonstrating that hypnosis is real and that use of hypnosis can have real measurable affects on the brain and other tissues of the body as well as effecting behavior. Thanks to modern medical equipment and procedures such as Positron emission tomography (PET), scientists are showing that effects of hypnosis are different and more profound than the effects of mere imagination (The Truth and the Hype of Hypnosis, Scientific American, July, 2001). In addition to hypnotherapy done with a Hypnotherapist, universities are now mounting evidence that self-hypnosis can also be a powerful tool when learned from a qualified instructor (The Journal of Family Practice 2001; 50: 441-443).

Hypnosis Training
Hypnotherapy as a profession is not commonly taught in colleges and universities. Individuals who would like to learn more about the use of hypnotherapy or becoming trained in hypnotherapy need to look at schools which specialize in hypnosis training. When selecting a source for hypnosis training, we recommend that you contact reputatable organizations such as the National Guild of Hypnotists, or the state agency responsible for licensing schools.

Becoming a Hypnotherapist has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. The field of hypnotherapy has provided me with the ability to help people that I never could have helped by doing talk therapy. It has also provided me a way to help them more quickly than doing talk therapy would have. If you are already in a helping profession such as medicine, psychology, counseling or related a field, I would encourage you to look into hypnotherapy training. If you are not currently trained or licensed in professions such as these, and you are interested in training in a career that rapidly helps people make good positive changes their lives, I would also encourage you to look into this fast growing profession. Advanced degrees are not required to enter into training which leads to certification. Only certification courses that are of at least 100 hours in duration are recognized in all 50 states.

Were You Born to Help Others?

To have a successful hypnosis practice, you have to not only do sessions, but also do office work.

To have a successful hypnosis practice, you have to not only do sessions, but also do office work.

Were you born to help others have happy fulfilling lives?  Are you looking for a new career or a way to bring in additional income?  Are you a therapist, nurse, or counselor who needs some new life breathed into your work?  If so, a career in hypnosis may be a good fit for you.

Please read below an early article about what it was like for me when I began my journey as a hypnotist.  This article, though written about 3 years ago, still has a lot of validity.  If you have any questions, please contact me anytime.  To find out more go to www.DallasHypnosisCareerTraining.com

The Frugal but Professional Practice (Part 2)
By Celeste Hackett

In this article read about:

  • The Hairy Hypnotist of Houston.
  • How to Do a Sniff Test.
  • The Cheapest Malpractice Insurance You Can Get.
  • The Lagniappe Method.

In my last article I addressed several things which I think are important when starting your hypnosis practice without a lot of money. One was get good business training, so that you can organize your office and handle in-coming calls efficiently. Another I mentioned was to consider working from home (I work from an apartment in Dallas.)

Working from your home is a great way to get started right away for many people, so let’s explore this a bit more. There are ways to work from home no matter how little money you have. I only had about $2000.00, but you could begin with as little as the price of a used recliner, business cards and flyers.

Most of my initial working budget was spent on my website, (right at about $1000.00), brochures, business cards, video recording equipment, and a yellow pages ad. Before I actually set up my business I also got a good deal of training and training materials, so I am not counting education in my start up cost. This article assumes that you already have decent basic training as a hypnotist.

Now even though I say that working from home is great for many people I did not say ALL people. For instance, people who are not relatively decent house-keepers, and those who collect clutter are a couple of examples who should not work from home. But, my friend, opinions are just that, opinions.

The Hairy Hypnotist of Houston

I once knew a cat fur-covered man in Houston, a 65 year old bachelor, who worked from his old and decaying bachelor-like home (as a family counselor –often dabbling in waking hypnosis) and he loved to do it his way. He only charged $20.00 for an hour and ½ and he was very talented. So, for people like me who can over look tons of cat hair (and cats) and dust for the right price (and results) he was a God-send. In fact, he had people flying in from all over the country to see him! So keep in mind there are exceptions to every rule.

Now, Lets talk about your cute doggy, or is it your cute kitty? Do not work from a pet-centric home unless you can keep the noise, odor and friendliness under control. My husband and I would really like a cat, but lots of people are allergic to cats and those little four legged-furry people can be very neurotic. I once had a cat that would jump at any door and meow loudly until I would let him in no matter what room I was in.

I have to admit right here and now, though, that I LOVE going to shops that have a cat running around. It feels homey. So maybe it would be okay if you had one of those quiet independent cat types. If you really want to work from home and you can’t afford an office and you love your little Bowsers or meowsers, I guess you could give it a try. If it doesn’t work you will find out soon enough. Or you could consider becoming a niche hypnotist. You could put an ad in the local Pet Gazette and call yourself The Pet Lover’s Hypnotist. Personally, I don’t think you’ll really be able to make a living at it.

How to Do a Sniff Test

Thinking of pets brings me to another point, smells. Do you take out the garbage regularly? Do you cook a lot? Do you change the cat’s litter box every day? Do you even realize that your house smells like last night’s popcorn? Working from home you are more likely to have odors that you wouldn’t have in an outside office. So, I’ve made it a rule, at my apartment, to step outside on the balcony before clients come in and take a few breaths of fresh air. I then come back inside and do the sniff test. This may seem silly, but it’s very important because, let’s face it, once you have been inside with an odor you easily overlook it after a while.

Also, you should consider working outside of the home if you are in an unstable or emotionally explosive relationship. It’s important to be in a calming environment where you are supported and encouraged. When I first started learning hypnosis I was in a relationship with a “person” who was very critical. I actually tried seeing clients from our home in between bouts of arguing, and let me tell you, it was pretty hard to concentrate on hypnosis or my clients needs at those times. It didn’t help that I also was always afraid he might do something or say something that would embarrass me in some way. Luckily, I got the heck out of that relationship!

So, what about safety issues? Anytime you work from home you take on some amount of personal risk. Yes, there are bad people and bad things do happen to perfectly nice people every day. One of the best things you can do to protect yourself is to always be very honest and fair. I make sure that even if a client doesn’t get exactly what they came in for, they at least get some benefit and they leave feeling good about themselves and that causes them to like me. I also am very careful not to make false claims and I do not guarantee success.

The Cheapest Malpractice Insurance You Can Get

You may find it interesting to know that also, safety, in terms of being sued for malpractice, could boil down to how nice you are! In the book Blink, Malcolm Gladwell, shares information showing that in analyses of malpractice lawsuits there are highly skilled doctors who get sued a lot and there are doctors who make lots of mistakes and never get sued. There are also an overwhelming number of people who suffer injury due to negligence of a doctor and never file a malpractice suit at all!

After further investigation Gladwell discovered that what comes up a lot in malpractice cases is that patients say they were rushed, ignored or treated poorly. He quotes a leading medical malpractice lawyer, Alice Burkin, who says, “People just don’t sue doctors they like.” This lawyer also states that she has never had a client say, I really like this doctor, and I feel terrible doing it, but I want to sue him.” She says they come in wanting to sue some specialist, and when she tells them, “We don’t think that doctor was negligent, we think it’s your primary care doctor who was at fault.” They then say something like, “I don’t care what she did. I love her and I’m not suing her.” So, your best malpractice insurance may be your tone of voice, your undivided attention and your sympathetic expression.

Even though I believe being nice is probably the best malpractice insurance you can get, I do not mean that you should forego REAL malpractice insurance. I get mine through American Professional Agency, INC. Their number is 1-800-421-6694. I pay only $116.00 per year, but will have to pay more as I see more clients.

Another important thing to do is use your instincts. When someone calls Family First Hypnosis, I very simply tune into my gut and I suggest you do too. Since I have worked many years both in person and on the phone with the general public(I was a major market radio announcer), I quickly get a pretty good feel for whether or not I have a person with a problem or a problem with a problem. If you are not a good judge of character, DO NOT work from home!

Also, I make it a rule to see male clients in the afternoon when my husband is home(I have a very supportive husband who is as quiet as a mouse). I did have one male client I scheduled in the morning while my husband was at work. Not only did my intuition give him the okay on the phone, but he wanted to schedule himself, his wife and niece for a group session. Bad men don’t usually want to bring a wife and niece with them. I don’t do group sessions, so I declined. He went on to book a one-on-one session for himself anyway. As I suspected he turned out to be a fine person. But note, that yes, I took a risk. Hey, everything in life is a risk.

The final and most important thing to keep yourself safe is to meditate, do 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®, or some other spiritual alignment or inner cleansing effort. Many hypnotists surround themselves with light or spiritual protection while in an altered state.

Someone who was into the concept of Karma once told me that I should be more careful anyway, because I could also be unknowingly bringing bad past karma from a former life into this one. Well, if that is the case, and meditation and right action are not enough, it seems to me the piper would have to be paid sooner or later whether I work from home or an outside office, right? In the mean time I get to help people while enjoying all the comforts of home.

In my next article I hope to show you how to make your hypnosis practice more friendly and palatable to clients who might think hypnosis is weird no matter if you work at home or not. If I have time and space I hope to also include my personal budget that I use for my office here at Chisolm Place Apartments. You will be amazed at how inexpensive it is to have a practice from home!

The Lagniappe Method

Before I wrap up I want to offer you an idea, something we Louisianan’s call Lagniappe. (I’m originally from central Louisiana, but I lived in New Orleans for 8 1/2 years.) New Orleans, before its sad demise, was full of lagniappe. Lagniappe means “a little something extra.” You get lagniappe (pronounced LAN-yap) when you order a dozen oysters on the half shell and they give you 13. Or when you buy a new hammer and a box of nails comes with it.

If you believe like I do that what goes around comes around, or you reap what you sow then it is worth considering using this lagniappe method in your hypnosis practice. Many 5-PATH֭™-ERS (hypnotists who practice the 5-PATH™ system of hypnosis) offer to teach 7th Path (A special self-hypnosis that can be used for on-going self-healing and is influenced by meditation.) or they offer the book The Secret Language of Feelings for free. These are planned lagniappe offerings. But opportunities for employing spontaneous lagniappe may be even more powerful.

An example of a spontaneous lagniappe opportunity happened to us yesterday. A client, who lives and dies by her day timer, accidentally left it in my office. Even though, her place of employment was out of the way, my husband willingly drove over and returned it to her. She was very grateful indeed. In fact, she was so touched by the gesture that she told several of her colleagues all about the wonderful hypnosis experience she had just had. When my husband arrived with the day planner he was bombarded with questions about hypnosis and our business!

To illustrate further I’d like to offer a bit of lagniappe from me to you. This “little something extra” is made especially for hypnotists who are very gustatory like me. So, here you go an unexpected freebie for you. Thank you for taking the time to read this article. I appreciate you.

Wicked-Good Hypnotic Cookies
(Do not eat while driving)

1 ½ cups of oat flakes
1 ½ cups of whole wheat pastry flour
1 ½ tsp aluminum free baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
¼ tsp sea salt
½ cup corn oil
½ cup of water
1/2 cup of maple syrup
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup of toasted sunflower seeds

Stir it all together. Use an ice-cream scoop or a 1/3 cup measurer to scoop out. Put these large mounds of batter on the cookie sheet. Bake 20 minutes for 375 degrees. Eat them carefully. They are known to cause deep trance.

My Hypnosis Career Journey

By Tina L. Shafer CH, CPHI

When I first started out as a hypnotist in 1999, I wasn’t really trying to have a business; I was just looking for the answer to weight loss! After all, I had my hands full with being a mom and a wife and getting to know a new community. In 1998 my family relocated to Michigan, where I met a very nice woman hypnotist at a local festival. She was offering free relaxations at her booth and I was working a booth nearby. My husband saw me watching the crowd around her and after a while whispered to me, “She’s a hypnotist; you should go talk to her.” I quirked my eyebrows at him with that look, “Yeah …Right!”

I had never met a hypnotist before, had no idea really what a hypnotist even did, but I was curious and she looked friendly and harmless. So I kept my eye on her and in between visitors, we struck up a conversation. Of course I asked the usual questions, “Does that hypnosis stuff really work?” and “You won’t make me quack like a duck, will you?”  She invited me into her chair for a sample relaxation and all I could think afterward was, “Wow!” I had no idea how important that pivotal moment would become in my life.

I had uncovered the solution to my own weight loss issue with hypnosis, and I was hooked! I started realizing how much everyone could use this process to make changes in their lives, and began looking for the best trainers and programs. I received my first hypnosis certification in 1999. It was good training but I really didn’t have the confidence I needed to comfortably see clients and help others.

In 2003 I took a 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® Workshop given at The Hypnosis Center near St. Paul Minnesota. Wow again! What a life changing process that workshop was for me, another pivotal moment. All I could talk about on the way home was how I wanted to get certified to teach what I had just learned. As a natural born leader with a passion for teaching I wanted to spread the word and share the solution with others.

After training with Cal Banyan to become a 5PATH® Consulting Hypnotist and a 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® Teacher (in 2004), I knew this was the stuff I had been looking for. I was truly advancing my own personal growth while at the same time developing a successful career. In 2006 I made the decision to become a Certified Professional Hypnosis Instructor (CPHI) and again trained with Cal.

The Hypnosis Success Center (HSC) officially opened in 2006, I love that the programs I teach are approved and recognized by the National Guild of Hypnotists, the oldest, long standing hypnosis organization in the world, and I know it gives my students confidence as well. In 2008, HSC received the first year permit to become a Michigan State Licensed Private Trade School and in 2009 it became official! HSC was licensed through the State of Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth – Proprietary Unit as a Hypnosis Career Training School.

Now…looking back to 1999, before that day of meeting the hypnotist at the festival, if anyone would have said “Tina, you are going to become a hypnotist, and own a state licensed school where you train professionals in the art of hypnotism…” I would have quirked my eyebrows and said, “Yeah …Right!” But hey, you just never know what the Universe has in store for you! So now you know my hypnotism journey so far. If you are interested in adding hypnotism to a current profession or changing careers, here are the first steps to your journey!

  1. Seek out professional training!  The 5PATH® System is perfect for building confidence in beginners and teaches advance techniques that even seasoned hypnotists certified in other modalities seek out. PLUS, you get to learn 7th Path Self-Hypnosis® which will tremendously advance your personal growth and development.
  2. Make sure your certification training program is approved by a reputable organization such as the National Guild of Hypnotists.
  3. Check that the training school you chose is state licensed and/or adhering to local laws. If they are not, your certification will not be valid.
  4. Does the instructor have experience with seeing clients and teaching students? You want a well versed instructor that is seeing clients and practicing what they teach.
  5. Interview your instructor and their past students. You want to know that your instructor is going to be there to answer your questions after your training is complete and you begin seeing your first clients.

Help Wanted! Hypnotherapists Needed To Fill Demand

Calvin D. Banyan, MA, BCH, CI

Hypnosis Training by Cal BanyanHelp wanted! Many more Hypnotherapists will be needed to fill the demand for this emerging profession and training is available in Orange County, California. Recent feedback from professionals about this hypnotherapy training goes like this…

Samadhi (Ph.D.) says, This is an incredibly well-thought out process.

Cory (Ph.D.) says, The skills I’ve learned can benefit, not only a clinical population, but are useful in everyday experience.

Hans (M.Ed.) said, Very useful and practical application of techniques of formal hypnosis.

Kinshasha (M.A.) said, …the most important class of my life! A My personal growth, thinking processes and outlook on life are changed.

Roseanne (R.N.) said, I believe that the information given and techniques in this course are the most valuable tools I have ever received to use to assist people in their healing process.

Rebecca (B.A.) This is so much more than I ever expected.

Tracy, a teacher (B.S.) reported, I found this training to be life changing.

What all of these professionals have in common is their new understanding of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, a powerful way to help people make long lasting positive changes in their lives. (Client and student comments and letters are on file at The Hypnosis Center, Inc. office.)

As an experienced Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist and Instructor, leaving conventional "talk" therapy behind, and focusing exclusively on hypnotherapy has simply been one of the best moves I have ever made professionally. I now get right to the root of the problem (the subconscious issues) and my clients rapidly overcome the old issues that have been holding them back from being successful. And, it is much more satisfying to get results in so few sessions!

Hypnotherapy is astoundingly effective. Last year while teaching a NGH certification course, I was showing a training video that showed me working with a client, and an astonished Clinical Psychologist proclaimed from the back row, I can’t believe what I just saw! You just accomplished in about 20 minutes what I have been trying to accomplish for seven years! After the class she asked to be taken on as a client!

Hypnotherapy done right, using some of the most powerful techniques, applied in a systematic approach (such as in the 5-PATH® system) literally leaves other psychotherapies in the dust (i.e., cognitive, analytic, and behavioral). Talk therapies often take months or years, with the first two to six sessions usually accomplishing little beyond being "get acquainted" or "goal-setting" sessions. When working with a Hypnotherapist, for the vast majority of issues, for the majority of people, the process will be completed in about that many sessions! This kind of efficacy and efficiency is very attractive to clients, which will most likely make it the first choice among self-improvement technologies in the future.

Hypnotherapy is a stand-alone profession or it may be a part of other professions such as psychology, psychiatry, counseling, teaching, coaching or even the ministry. Generally, a Hypnotherapist works independently or alongside such professionals by referral. The areas in which a Hypnotherapist can practice is almost unlimited. Clients at The Hypnosis Center, Inc. come to us for help for issues like habit control, addiction, weight loss, overcoming fears, anxiety and trauma, as well as improving mood, self-esteem, personal performance and family issues. Medical issues commonly include pain management including Hypno-Birthing. This list goes on. A well trained and experienced Hypnotherapist can help clients either as the primary helping professional or in a complementary role to another professional working on any problem (psychological, mental, even physiological as in the case of physical illnesses with a psychosomatic component).

Unfortunately, colleges and universities are not turning out hypnotherapists! Established educational institutions rarely offer courses in hypnosis or hypnotherapy that lead to certification. And, those that do are generally out of date when it comes to teaching modern hypnotherapeutic techniques. For modern practical hypnotherapy training and certification (certification is required to practice in Minnesota) you must turn to one of the national hypnosis organizations. I recommend the oldest and largest, the NGH (certification does not require a degree but does require a minimum of 100 hours training).

When selecting an instructor, I recommend that you make sure that the instructor is certified as a Hypnotherapist and Instructor by such an organization. He or she should be in practice (not just instructing) and have client and student testimonials ready for you to see, as well as have professionals that you can contact to ask about the quality of training.

Hypnosis has been recognized and approved by the American Medical Association since 1958. Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist are professional titles recognized by the State of Minnesota and the United States Government and are listed in The Dictionary of Occupational Titles, published by the United States Department of Labor.

Hypnosis Training Classes in Dallas

Top 7 Reasons to Be a Hypnotist

By Celeste Hackett, C.H., B.C.H., C.P.H.I

If you are considering becoming a hypnotist/hypnotherapist, but are still not quite sure. The following 7 reasons (plus bonus reasons) may be just what you need! I hope to see you in my November class November 2-13! We also have a March Class coming up in 2010, one scheduled for the summer and one next October. Check out my website to learn more. www.DallasHypnosisCareerTraining.com.

1 – Become Financially Independent

You can begin making money right away with very little start up when you get very good training in hypnotism. I started out seeing clients part time out of an apartment. I earned around 30K my first year while I was in training learning how to do hypnosis sessions. The following year I made about 75K! I give details in a series of articles entitled The Frugal but Professional Practice. Those articles are on this website. Check them out.

2 – Set Your Own Hours

I started my professional life as a radio announcer. In radio, announcers often have to work weekends and night shifts. After 24 years, I hated that. I wanted to have weekends off and I wanted regular 9 to 5 hours during the week, so once I became a hypnotist, I just made my own schedule. My new schedule is Tuesday through Friday. That’s right, who wants to work on Monday? I don’t. I also scheduled myself a 2 hour lunch! And when I want a vacation, or a longer weekend, no one has to approve it, I just block out the time and go.

3 – Get Started Helping People Fast

When I left radio I wanted a new career and I didn’t have the time to go to college. I prayed for something that would give me a meaningful education in a very short time. At my school, Dallas Hypnosis Career Training, that’s exactly what we do for our students. We eat, drink and sleep hypnosis for 10 intensive days in our training classes. Afterwards, you have on-going free support. There are also support training materials that you can buy if you want. (They are not absolutely necessary but are very helpful.)

Why is our training only two weeks long? We want you to begin hypnotizing right away, because that is where the real learning comes, on the job. Most every hypnosis instructor agrees, after you get the how to, real life experience is going to be your very best teacher. Keep in mind while you are learning you will have questions and we’ll be there for you.

4 – Get a New Career at a Fraction of the Cost of College

My niece is going to college for an associate’s degree in nursing. We figured it out. By the time she is finished with her degree program, her school costs will amount to over 30 thousand dollars! Our prices are less than a tenth of that. College prices vary quite a bit, but the school my niece is going to is one of the more reasonably priced ones. By the way, hypnosis is a great adjunct to many career paths, such as nursing, consulting, counseling or teaching and more.

5 – Job Security

I would never fire myself! So I don’t worry about losing my job. What a great boss I am! I work as hard or as much as I want to. I really love it. Also, there are no meetings unless I call them, and there is only a very limited amount of paperwork.

By the way, when big companies like Mervyn’s, Bennigan’s, AIG Insurance, Bear Stern Banking, Balleys, Sharper Image, Mrs. Fields, Circuit City (and more) all recently went bankrupt, we stayed in business. Not only did we stay in business, but my husband quit his job and started his new business from scratch. This along with my disabled niece coming to live with us put a strain on our two hypnosis businesses Family First Hypnosis and our School, Dallas Hypnosis Career Training, but, despite less income and another dependent, we have managed to stay in business and grow.

Why did we do so well? When you own your own business you are in control of not only costs, but all aspects of your work. So, if you are reasonably good with money, getting results with clients and are sensible you’ll probably be just fine too. See our recent press release: Job Security is Hypnotic to learn more about why we think starting your own business and hypnosis as a career path is a good bet in these economic times. 6 – Help People When Everything Else Has Failed for Them

I can’t tell you how many times me and other hypnotists have heard from my client, "You are my last resort." Clients typically will come to you after they’ve tried everything else, doctors, medicine, psychiatrists and more. Imagine how good you will feel, not only giving them hope, but then making that hope real for them. There is no better feeling than to help another human being and helping when all odds seem to be against them will just bring tears to your eyes as well as theirs.

7 – See Amazing Hypnotic Phenomena Every Day

Experience the wonder of being a hypnotist! Seeing the power of the subconscious mind is pretty exciting. It’s tremendous to see hypnotic amnesia, catalepsy, instant and rapid inductions and more at work, but the most jaw-dropping thing is to hear from your clients own lips the greater insight they have about their problem and didn’t know they had.

It’s also extremely interesting to hear a person’s life story and see how circumstances, experiences, beliefs and feelings have caused their problems. One such client I had, a recent weight loss client, is a good example of this. This client made and ate a big bowl of cookie dough every day and couldn’t stop this cycle. She was just so driven to make and eat cookie dough.

When we did the uncovering process we found, to both of our surprise, a fear of rats was at the bottom of it all! She’d eat the cookie dough as a way of getting her mind off of her fear of rats. When she was a little girl her mom had a fear of rats because they lived in a house with a bunch of them. My client picked up her mother’s fear. She’d be nervous while at home as a grown woman and as a means of distracting from her nervousness she’d do what a lot of people do, eat. Once she got over her fear, she stopped making the cookie dough and began to lose weight!

NOW FOR SOME BONUS REASONS TO BE A HYPNOTIST!

Help Family and Friends

Lots of people are attracted to this profession so that they can help a friend or family member. There are so many ways to do this using hypnosis. You can teach them the very powerful self-hypnosis process called 7th Path® that you’ll learn in the class that I, Cal and other 5-PATH® instructors teach. You can also safely use direct suggestion with friends and family, use NLP techniques with them, waking suggestion and learn and teach things like EFT to help them to overcome issues. Our training is a doorway to an eye-boggling amount of healing modalities that are available.

I know how important it is to help family and friends. I’ve worked with two of my nieces using hypnosis. One niece had a fear of public speaking and she overcame it with hypnosis sessions and promptly made an "A" in her class. My other niece, the one who now lives with me and blesses my life immensely, had mood swings, skin picking issues and other problems to the point of her being on several medications. She has gotten way better with just about everything. Her psychiatrist is working with us to lower her meds bit by bit. Our goal is for her to eventually be off of all of the medications. When that happens we are going to throw her a party!

Get Over Your Own Problems

Wow, there isn’t enough room here to write all the ways hypnosis has changed my life, but let me tell you just one way. This is kind of personal, but also amazing. I started my period when I was 14 years old. Since the very beginning I never had regular periods each month. With self-hypnosis techniques I learned as a hypnotist, I was able to uncover the cause of my problem (an event that occurred when I was 8 years old), and change the subconscious belief holding my problem in place.

Once that was done, my periods were normal and regular! It’ only took me 30 years to finally get this problem resolved! Doctors didn’t do it; diet didn’t do it, only hypnosis helped me to help myself with this problem. In my next article I plan to give all the humorous and, as I said, personal details about what I found and how I fixed it, so make sure you come back and read my next article.

Meet New and Fascinating People

When you become a hypnotist you’ll walk in circles with some of the most interesting people and the most fascinating thinkers of our times. Imagine having friends that will encourage and support you with just the right words at the right time. Hypnotists know how to be real friends and you’ll have many opportunities to befriend all kinds of wonderful people from all over the world.

Be a Part of the Solution for the World’s Problems

Have you ever felt the world’s problems were hopeless? I know I have. You’ll love knowing that each time you help someone you help not only that one person, but everyone connected with them and the positive changes vibrate out many times.

For instance, just the other day, I helped a lady overcome her anger at her mother. This caused her to be more loving with not only her mother, but also her husband and kids. Do you think, they in turn, just might be kinder to those in their circles? We are all so interconnected. You’ll love knowing that you are helping people, families and thus our society and the world. We all influence each other and the more good we can put into the world, the more hope we have for world-wide love and peace.

Coffee With Celeste Hackett

I’m sitting down with a nice hot cup of coffee writing this.  It’s getting all autumny outside, dark, wet and almost cold.  I have, for the first time this Fall, a heater blowing at my feet.  I love the start of the end of every beautiful year.

As I sit here, I am reminded that in a few months, my hypnosis business, Family First Hypnosis,  in Dallas, will be having it’s anniversary!  That’s right, we will begin our 5th year this upcoming January.

Reflecting on these past 4  years, I am awed at all that I’ve learned and all that has happened.  I started out in a tiny old apartment, three flights up by a big ugly dumpster.  I saw clients out of that apartment day in and day out.  Later we saved enough to buy a house where we see clients and now we own the first state licensed hypnosis school in North Texas, Dallas Hypnosis Career Training.

When I first became a hypnotist, I began writing about the ups and downs of starting a hypnosis practice on a shoestring.  Here is my first article for you to read, for those who haven’t had the chance.  The date was sometime early in the year 2006, I believe.   Many things have changed since these articles, but there is still plenty of good advice in them.  If you are considering a career in hypnosis please contact me with any questions.  I’d love to talk with you!

The Frugal but Professional Practice
by Celeste Hackett, C.H.

Early 2006

I believe that hypnotism is a calling. And if you get it, it sort of burns in your breast until you do something with it. Once you start really seeing hypnotic phenomena in friends or clients you become kind of star struck and most of us can never go back to the old way of being. You change. It’s like waking up. And the curious thing is not everyone gets the call from seeing the magic. It’s a special gift for a select few.

Did you get the call like I did? In the articles I will be writing here I hope I can offer you information or inspiration to help you to answer your call and start or further develop your business. Keep in mind, however that I am new to starting my own business, and new to writing about it, so everything I say will be in that context. I hope to share with you what I have done that has worked for me and I am very interested in hearing what’s worked for you.

You may be surprised to learn that, so far, what I have done in my business has actually put me in the black in only six weeks! So maybe some of what I have implemented will help you too. I just started this past January 2006. Now I didn’t say I was very far in the black, but I am in the black by a hair. But most new businesses don’t even see that color black for over a year or more – if at all, so I am very pleased indeed.

So without further blah blah blah, let’s just jump right in to some of what I consider to have helped get my practice started on the right foot.

Learn How to Run Your Office AND Be a Hypnotist
Most hypnotists start out with more training in session work than in setting up and running an office. To me the running the office part of having my own business was confusing, overwhelming and frustrating. If this rings true with you then the first thing I hope you will invest in is some sort of practice-building training that includes heavy information on administration. I love Maureen Banyan’s Business Start up Pack.

The Business Pack, as it is affectionately known, was endlessly helpful to me. I can now say that my office is actually organized and even more productive than my session work! I don’t have to worry about how to get results with selling on the phone, collecting money, scheduling, filing etc. because I have a system that works easily and smoothly. NOW I can really concentrate on what I love most which is working with clients and growing as a hypnotist.

With the knowledge I gained from my business training (in all of two CD’s and one little booklet) I have turned almost every phone call into an appointment. I now get money for several sessions UP FRONT and I have a tested way to be certain that my clients show up and come back. Also, I am now taking credit cards, and I DO NOT work nights or weekends! I could easily write a whole article on a host of many other benefits I received from this office training I received, but just take my word for it, It is far more than worth the money to spend time in the non-clinical part of your practice.

Think About Working out of Your Home
I work out of a home office. LOTS of people have cautioned me against this, but I am hard-headed. And I am glad I am because it has worked beautifully for me. I have found working from a home to be no problem at all once I got over it. My main concern was that I thought if I didn’t have a real office it would look like I was not successful. And to tell the truth our home is not a single family home but an apartment.

In fact, I am happy to say I just finished a fourth session with a man who, in the course of our conversation today, very humbly mentioned that he just happens to be a multi-millionaire. He loves what hypnosis has done for him. He is making changes to help with stress while working on two new start up ventures and dealing with a difficult family member. To think that I was concerned no one would come here. He also has asked me to be on a video he is putting together depicting his personal journey while going through starting these businesses, sort of like a documentary! (Of course I said YES! I’ll keep you posted.)

I have to tell you that at first when I started working from my apartment I tried to think of all kinds of things to say in case anyone asked why we don’t have a real office or at least a house. I decided I would say, “Because we just got married and are saving for one”. Or “I don’t need much space so it just makes sense” or “It’s hard to find an office in such an excellent location”. But to tell you the truth no one cares! It wasn’t long before I found out that actually clients are very caught up in their own problem. THAT’S what they want to know about. Can you for Pete’s sake help me? Or they are very concerned that they can’t be hypnotized.

The best part of working from home (or in my case Chisolm Place Apartments) is our rent is free! Or is it my office is free? One of them is free. Yippee! I also save money by using my home computer and phone for office work, plus I don’t have additional utilities to pay. All of this saves me a ton of money. In addition, I don’t have a commute, and if I want to take a nap between clients, or put in a load of laundry or wear a mud mask for a pimple, I can. I have even been known to wear my pajamas until 10 am when my first client usually arrives. (Flannel. With little moons and stars on them.)

Now there are some things that you do have to be careful of like choosing clients, and doing things that create a space in your home that reflects professionalism. And in my next article I will go into these issues in more detail. I also hope to share how to prepare your client before he arrives so he will feel even more confident and ready to work with you whether you work from home or not. So until then keep believing in your dreams but also DO something about them.

Welcome to HypnosisInstructors.com, Hypnosis Training and an Introduction

I’m so happy to see that this new website is up and running.  I expect that we will see some changes develop as we continue to work on the site.

Right now, we are getting all the hypnosis instructors set up so that they can post information that everyone can appreciate.

Let me tell you a bit about the hypnosis instructors who will be posting here…  Every one of the writers belong to an elite team of hypnosis instructors.  They have both been certified to use and teach the Banyan systems of basic and advanced hypnosis and self-hypnosis.  Click here to see the definitions of the Banyan hypnosis training certificates and training.

We hope that you will look into each of the Certified Professional Hypnosis Instructors (CPHIs) who post here whenever you look for hypnosis training.

In our classes, not only will you learn basic and intermediate levels of hypnotism and hypnotherapy, but you will also learn 5-PATH® and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®.

5-PATH® is a very special form of hypnosis and hypnotherapy that is systematic in its approach to working with a variety of issues for which hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been found to be effective.  In addition to having received international acclaim, it is also the very first form of hypnotherapy to have ever been recognized as a Special Interest Group by the National Guild of Hypnotists, the world’s largest hypnosis organization.

7th Path Self-Hypnosis®, is the very first mind-body-spirit self-hypnosis program that deals directly with both limiting beliefs, and emotional factors that get in the way of personal success.  It is a kind of insight process that removes blockages that the practitioner may not even have been aware of.  It has been called the “very first antivirus software program for the human mind” because those blockages limit your ability to function at your highest level and reach your goals and potential in life.

With that, I look forward to reading the posts that will soon be published here.  Please leave your comments below.

Let’s do great things together!

Hypnosis Research for Burn Patients

Hi, I’m Celeste Hackett, Certified Professional Hypnosis Instructor and Board Certified Hypnotist. I just love teaching hypnosis training classes in Dallas and I am constantly amazed at the creative ways hypnosis can be utilized to help people overcome a variety of problems. Recently researchers from the Université de Lyon in Villeurbanne Cedex, France, studied guided imagery (something hypnotists do with most every client) to see if it could improve motor performance in the rehabilitation of burn patients.

The study looked at the effects of a 2-week Motor Imagery training program, combined with conventional rehabilitation, on the recovery of motor functions in patients specifically with hand burns. Fourteen patients at the Medical Burn Center took part in the study and were randomly assigned to either the guided imagery or the control group. Behavioral data related to the ability to perform each successive step of three manual motor sequences were collected at five intervals. The results showed evidence that Motor Imagery training may facilitate motor recovery, and noted that the belief in the effectiveness of Motor Imagery was strong in all patients. Motor Imagery may substantially contribute to improve the efficacy of conventional rehabilitation programs. Therefore, this technique should be considered as a reliable alternative method to help burn patients to recover motor functions.

Hypnotists routinely do guided imagery and have for years. Guided imagery is just one of many tools a hypnotist uses for working with pain, physical ailments as well as stress and many other things.

Here is where you can find the article:Citation: Guillot A, Lebon F, Vernay M, Girbon JP, Doyon J, Collet C. Effect of motor imagery in the rehabilitation of burn patients. Journal of Burn Care Research. 2009 Jul-Aug; 30 (4): pages 686-93.
