NGH Newsletter: AAEH Merges with the NGH

Association to Advance Ethical HypnosisNational Guild of Hypnotists

According to the latest National Guild of Hypnotists Newsletter, “Dr. Dwight Damon, president of NGH, Inc., and Dr. Walter Brackelmanns, president of AAEH, announced this week that the Association to Advance Ethical Hypnosis is officially merging their membership into the National Guild of Hypnotists.”

This is important because the AAEH is the second oldest hypnotism membership organization, which was founded in 1956. The NGH welcomes the members of AAEH to its membership, and will have more information about the merging of the two organizations in its upcoming publications.
This comes at an interesting time in the history of the NGH, as 2010 is its 60th year. During its history, the NGH has always strived to “provide and open forum for a free exchange of ideas concerning hypnotism.”

I hope all hypnosis professionals will also take the time to learn more about the NGH, the one organization that is doing more to promote and guide the future of the profession of hypnotism. More information about the benefits of becoming a member can be found at www.NGH.net.

When Choosing A Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy School Or Trainer, Consider These Points…

Hypnosis Training and CertificationWhen selecting a hypnosis school or trainer, of course we hope that you will pick a Banyan Certified Professional Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy Instructor. However, no matter who you pick or where the school is located, here are some important points you should always keep in mind. High quality training is essential to the ongoing success and development of the profession and to the professionals that practice in the field of hypnosis, hypnotherapy and hypnotism.

Can the school or instructor substantiate claims made about their training?

Most people working in the field of hypnotherapy are good trustworthy individuals who have received adequate training and have the proper credentials to do hypnotherapy and conduct training. However, it makes sense to check them out. It’s easy for individuals or schools to say they are "one of the largest" in the world. Call them and ask them to substantiate this. Call their certifying organization and ask if it is true.

At the Banyan Hypnosis Center we have conducted over 30,000 hypnosis sessions since we opened in 1996. We attract an average of 40 to 50 new clients per month at our center. We have been called "the best ever seen" by a representative of the National Guild of Hypnotists. This is one of the best kind of environments in which you can learn to do hypnotherapy. When you learn at the Banyan Hypnosis Center For Training & Services, Inc. or from one of our Certified Professional Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy Instructor (CPHIs), you learn from hypnotherapists who have great training and substantial experience. This means you learn practical techniques that work. There is simply no better way to learn professional hypnotherapy.

How large are the classes?

Obviously, the larger the hypnosis training class is, the more difficult it is to maintain high standards of training. Ask how many students there are going to be in the class. You need to be able to ask questions and have them answered in an unhurried way during the course. Because of the nature of this work, and the intensity of the training, large classes may cause some students to be left behind. If classes have more than 16 students it may be necessary for the class to be broken down into smaller groups, or that there be more than one instructor.

Banyan CPHIs tend to keep the hypnosis training classes small so that we can make sure that each student is able to get individual attention so that the class meets his or her needs. We are even able to make small adjustment for each class so that special topics are covered that are of special interest to our students (i.e., hypnosis with children or more time on hypnosis for analgesia). Typically, our class size is 12 to 14 students, but in no case will a class for our NGH Certification Course held at Banyan Hypnosis Center For Training & Services exceed 16 students

How much supervised practice and skill-building time is given during the course?

Obviously, a student is going to be able to refine her skills and build sufficient confidence to do the work, only if sufficient time is given in class to attempt and master the techniques covered in class. Ask, how much time is given during the courses for the development of these important skills, while being supervised by a certified and experienced Hypnotherapist? The number one cause of hypnotherapist failure to develop a successful practice is that he or she did not develop a sufficient level of confidence and competence during the training.

CPHIs set their classes so that students practice the techniques they are learning nearly every day. Because of this, they graduate with confidence that they can competently use the skills that were taught during the course. Practice is done under the supervision of a highly skilled and experienced Hypnotherapist so that the skills that you develop are good ones. You are not left to practice on your own at night, without supervision. It is our experience that this can lead to the development of bad habits that are difficult to unlearn, once the problem has been developed. Only perfect practice make for perfect performance. Our certification course averages 10 to 14 hours of scheduled practice time.

Does the instructor still see clients?

Unfortunately, there are too many individuals out there who only teach how to do hypnosis, and don’t really do hypnotherapy themselves! They never really earned the right to teach you by spending time in the hypnotist’s chair themselves. Some are entertainers and will be fun to watch but you won’t really learn what you need to learn to be successful as a Hypnotherapist. Some are writers and can write book after book (mostly by doing research, meaning, reading other people’s books) but will not have practical experience that can make all the difference between success and failure when you see your clients.

When you learn hypnosis from one of our hypnosis instructors, you are learning from professionals who see clients. They are real Hypnotherapists who use what they teach on real clients. They walk the walk and not just talk the talk! Calvin Banyan, MA, CI, BCH has conducted thousands of individual hypnosis sessions, and continues to do so. He also supervises several other Hypnotherapists at the Banyan Hypnosis Center For Training & Services, Inc. and is a consultant to Hypnotherapists from around the world.

Is the school or trainer licensed to do adult education in their state or province?

It might not even be legal for the "school" or instructor to be providing adult education in the area where you are. States like California and Minnesota (just to name a few) require that the instructor or institution be licensed to provide hypnosis training.
Each Banyan Hypnosis Instructor is required to conform to all legal requirements where he or she teaches, and is fully licensed, insured and bonded to bring you our classes and courses as required by law.

Be careful of "schools" that ask you to buy materials before you even enter their courses.

Some instructors seem to teach for only one reason. They want to sell you their books, tapes and other materials, and they will require that you buy them before you even begin their program. Make sure that all the materials that you are required to buy are included in the cost of the tuition or are listed plainly so that you don’t get any surprises. The National Guild of Hypnotists Certification Course does NOT require you to buy or read any books other than the materials that you receive when you take the course. The cost of these materials are included in our NGH course.

The Banyan Hypnosis certifications contain all of your required materials. All materials are included in the cost of the courses. No additional purchases are required. In fact , we include, at no extra charge, materials that go beyond those required by the NGH. We also offer additional books, tapes and training videos for those who wish to purchase them and continue to learn more, but are not required to do so.

We include the following materials in the National Guild of Hypnotists Approved Banyan Hypnosis/Hypnotherapy Certification Super Course:

  • Level I – Student Manual, covering fundamentals of hypnosis, modern approaches to hypnosis, ethical concerns, waking suggestion, suggestibility testing, hypnosis scripts and more.

  • NGH Membership For One Year! After you complete the program you become a member of the world’s oldest and largest hypnosis organization, which offers many more benefits than mentioned here.

  • Calvin Banyan’s and Gerald Kein’s book, Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy: Basic To Advanced Techniques For The Professional, and indispensable guide to conducting successful hypnosis sessions, using waking suggestion, direct suggestion and age regression techniques.

  • Level II – Advanced Hypnotherapy Manual: 5-PATH and 7th Path. This cutting edge manual is constantly updated with the latest techniques and procedures used at Banyan Hypnosis Center For Training & Services, Inc. It includes outlines on the important procedures, like Age Regression Therapy and Forgiveness Therapy. It is also filled with scripts and directions on how to write you own effective hypnosis suggestions and scripts.

  • Get On the Path and Program Yourself for Success, the manual that you will learn how to use when teaching the 7th Path Self-Hypnosis Process to clients and students. It shows you how to use this unique mind-body-spirit approach to hypnosis.

  • Chevreul’s Pendulum, used in class to demonstrate suggestibility and uncover unconscious material. Every hypnotist should have one.

  • BRING AN EMPTY SUITCASE! You will need the extra space to take everything that you get in this class back home with you. PLUS, to aid you in getting everything that you want for your business, there are discounts available during the course on just about every book and tape that you find on this web site and more!

Does the school offer ongoing support free of charge?

Any good school or training organization should offer you additional sources of information for ongoing professional development, such as books, video and audiotapes, advanced workshops, and even one-on-one consultation time with an experienced instructor. But, do they offer fast answers through free online resources?

After completion of our hypnosis and hypnotherapy certification courses,we provide you with all of the resources that you need for ongoing professional development, plus some extras!

  • FREE web page on our site! Any graduate of one of our hypnotherapy courses gets a free web page! Wow! You can start getting clients in your area right away.

  • Easy ordering of books, tapes, videos, cassettes, etc. online via our web site, email or by telephone.

  • Advanced Hypnotherapy Workshops provided throughout the year. An example would be one of our courses on how to do hypnotherapy for weight loss or addiction.

  • Join our FREE online groups where our Graduates from all across the USA and around the world can ask questions, share experiences and more. You will also have access through this group to hypnosis scripts and procedures that are updated as they are continually developed at Banyan Hypnosis Center For Training & Services, Inc.

  • FREE answers to questions over the telephone and email. We regularly answer our graduate’s questions about hypnotherapy. This kind of support is free to our students because we find that most questions of this kind can be answered in just a few minutes. Knowing that when this kind of support is at hand greatly increases confidence and the speed in which you grow as a Hypnotherapist. Our success comes from your success.

Do graduates of the program receive certification by a nationally-recognized organization?

Anyone can start an organization and call it the "National" this-or-that. But hypnosis organizations have been coming and going for years. When you become part of an organization you want it to be the best. The organization that you belong to should have a strong membership and a long history. There should also be considerable ongoing benefits after you have joined.

Our Hypnotherapy Certification training results in you becoming a member of the National Guild of Hypnotists (NGH). We are proud members of the NGH ourselves. It is the world’s oldest and largest hypnosis organization. It has been influential in shaping the field of hypnosis and hypnotherapy for 50 years. The Guild is active with individual states and the national government, working to encourage the professional practice of hypnosis and hypnotherapy in all 50 states.

Members of the NGH receive many benefits including the best annual convention, professional journals, newsletters, ability to become insured, local chapters and much more. So, come to the best place to train, get certified…

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Is A Leading Edge Career

Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Is A Leading Edge Career

Calvin D. Banyan, MA, BCH, CI

Hypnotherapis Cal BanyanWhat is hypnotherapy? When a professional uses hypnosis to help people make healthy changes in their lives, he or she is doing hypnotherapy. The Hypnotherapist takes on a role similar to the Physical Therapist or the Occupational Therapist, often working independently or with professionals from fields such as medicine and psychology.

Is Hypnotherapy A "Stand-Alone" Profession Or Only A Particular Kind of Therapy?
The use of hypnosis in medicine was first approved and recognized by the American Medical Association in 1958. Now it is becoming a leading edge profession that is helping people accomplish their goals for health, sports, business, and much more. Often hypnotherapy is found to be effective when more traditional therapies have had no significant affect.

At present, hypnotherapy can be considered a stand-alone profession where hypnotherapists work independently with their clients. It is also a profession that provides a service that is complementary to almost any other human endeavor (i.e., medicine, psychology, counseling, education and sports enhancement). Did you know that many Olympic teams use hypnotherapists? Did you know that some major league baseball teams use hypnotherapists to get their valued players out of a slump? Did you know that one of the fastest growing areas in hypnotherapy is in the area of natural childbirth?

Who Should and Perhaps Should Not Use Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy?
The Hypnotherapist is the only professional who is trained to work directly with the subconscious and unconscious levels of the mind. This allows for astonishing successes when conventional attempts have failed. Hypnotherapy can be highly effective in helping people overcome problems which cannot be helped directly through working with the conscious mind. Emotions originate in parts of the mind that are not under the control of the conscious mind. Hypnotherapy can be highly effective for issues that have an emotional component. Areas where this can be of vital importance are addiction, chronic illness, chronic pain, self-esteem, relationship issues, repressed memories, motivation, phobias, stress management and more. In all of these cases, reducing or removing painful emotions can be an important aspect in the successful treatment.

As you can see by the list, hypnotherapy is usually used by normal everyday people with normal everyday problems. Hypnosis is less commonly used by mental health professionals who work with people who have been diagnosed as suffering from a mental illness. The use of hypnotherapy in treating people who are mentally ill is still in the early stages. More research needs to be done in the area of working with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and sever mood disorders.

Hypnosis and Science
Significant research is occurring at universities around the world, demonstrating that hypnosis is real and that use of hypnosis can have real measurable affects on the brain and other tissues of the body as well as effecting behavior. Thanks to modern medical equipment and procedures such as Positron emission tomography (PET), scientists are showing that effects of hypnosis are different and more profound than the effects of mere imagination (The Truth and the Hype of Hypnosis, Scientific American, July, 2001). In addition to hypnotherapy done with a Hypnotherapist, universities are now mounting evidence that self-hypnosis can also be a powerful tool when learned from a qualified instructor (The Journal of Family Practice 2001; 50: 441-443).

Hypnosis Training
Hypnotherapy as a profession is not commonly taught in colleges and universities. Individuals who would like to learn more about the use of hypnotherapy or becoming trained in hypnotherapy need to look at schools which specialize in hypnosis training. When selecting a source for hypnosis training, we recommend that you contact reputatable organizations such as the National Guild of Hypnotists, or the state agency responsible for licensing schools.

Becoming a Hypnotherapist has been one of the most rewarding decisions I have ever made. The field of hypnotherapy has provided me with the ability to help people that I never could have helped by doing talk therapy. It has also provided me a way to help them more quickly than doing talk therapy would have. If you are already in a helping profession such as medicine, psychology, counseling or related a field, I would encourage you to look into hypnotherapy training. If you are not currently trained or licensed in professions such as these, and you are interested in training in a career that rapidly helps people make good positive changes their lives, I would also encourage you to look into this fast growing profession. Advanced degrees are not required to enter into training which leads to certification. Only certification courses that are of at least 100 hours in duration are recognized in all 50 states.

Help Wanted! Hypnotherapists Needed To Fill Demand

Calvin D. Banyan, MA, BCH, CI

Hypnosis Training by Cal BanyanHelp wanted! Many more Hypnotherapists will be needed to fill the demand for this emerging profession and training is available in Orange County, California. Recent feedback from professionals about this hypnotherapy training goes like this…

Samadhi (Ph.D.) says, This is an incredibly well-thought out process.

Cory (Ph.D.) says, The skills I’ve learned can benefit, not only a clinical population, but are useful in everyday experience.

Hans (M.Ed.) said, Very useful and practical application of techniques of formal hypnosis.

Kinshasha (M.A.) said, …the most important class of my life! A My personal growth, thinking processes and outlook on life are changed.

Roseanne (R.N.) said, I believe that the information given and techniques in this course are the most valuable tools I have ever received to use to assist people in their healing process.

Rebecca (B.A.) This is so much more than I ever expected.

Tracy, a teacher (B.S.) reported, I found this training to be life changing.

What all of these professionals have in common is their new understanding of hypnosis and hypnotherapy, a powerful way to help people make long lasting positive changes in their lives. (Client and student comments and letters are on file at The Hypnosis Center, Inc. office.)

As an experienced Psychotherapist, Hypnotherapist and Instructor, leaving conventional "talk" therapy behind, and focusing exclusively on hypnotherapy has simply been one of the best moves I have ever made professionally. I now get right to the root of the problem (the subconscious issues) and my clients rapidly overcome the old issues that have been holding them back from being successful. And, it is much more satisfying to get results in so few sessions!

Hypnotherapy is astoundingly effective. Last year while teaching a NGH certification course, I was showing a training video that showed me working with a client, and an astonished Clinical Psychologist proclaimed from the back row, I can’t believe what I just saw! You just accomplished in about 20 minutes what I have been trying to accomplish for seven years! After the class she asked to be taken on as a client!

Hypnotherapy done right, using some of the most powerful techniques, applied in a systematic approach (such as in the 5-PATH® system) literally leaves other psychotherapies in the dust (i.e., cognitive, analytic, and behavioral). Talk therapies often take months or years, with the first two to six sessions usually accomplishing little beyond being "get acquainted" or "goal-setting" sessions. When working with a Hypnotherapist, for the vast majority of issues, for the majority of people, the process will be completed in about that many sessions! This kind of efficacy and efficiency is very attractive to clients, which will most likely make it the first choice among self-improvement technologies in the future.

Hypnotherapy is a stand-alone profession or it may be a part of other professions such as psychology, psychiatry, counseling, teaching, coaching or even the ministry. Generally, a Hypnotherapist works independently or alongside such professionals by referral. The areas in which a Hypnotherapist can practice is almost unlimited. Clients at The Hypnosis Center, Inc. come to us for help for issues like habit control, addiction, weight loss, overcoming fears, anxiety and trauma, as well as improving mood, self-esteem, personal performance and family issues. Medical issues commonly include pain management including Hypno-Birthing. This list goes on. A well trained and experienced Hypnotherapist can help clients either as the primary helping professional or in a complementary role to another professional working on any problem (psychological, mental, even physiological as in the case of physical illnesses with a psychosomatic component).

Unfortunately, colleges and universities are not turning out hypnotherapists! Established educational institutions rarely offer courses in hypnosis or hypnotherapy that lead to certification. And, those that do are generally out of date when it comes to teaching modern hypnotherapeutic techniques. For modern practical hypnotherapy training and certification (certification is required to practice in Minnesota) you must turn to one of the national hypnosis organizations. I recommend the oldest and largest, the NGH (certification does not require a degree but does require a minimum of 100 hours training).

When selecting an instructor, I recommend that you make sure that the instructor is certified as a Hypnotherapist and Instructor by such an organization. He or she should be in practice (not just instructing) and have client and student testimonials ready for you to see, as well as have professionals that you can contact to ask about the quality of training.

Hypnosis has been recognized and approved by the American Medical Association since 1958. Hypnotist and Hypnotherapist are professional titles recognized by the State of Minnesota and the United States Government and are listed in The Dictionary of Occupational Titles, published by the United States Department of Labor.

Welcome to HypnosisInstructors.com, Hypnosis Training and an Introduction

I’m so happy to see that this new website is up and running.  I expect that we will see some changes develop as we continue to work on the site.

Right now, we are getting all the hypnosis instructors set up so that they can post information that everyone can appreciate.

Let me tell you a bit about the hypnosis instructors who will be posting here…  Every one of the writers belong to an elite team of hypnosis instructors.  They have both been certified to use and teach the Banyan systems of basic and advanced hypnosis and self-hypnosis.  Click here to see the definitions of the Banyan hypnosis training certificates and training.

We hope that you will look into each of the Certified Professional Hypnosis Instructors (CPHIs) who post here whenever you look for hypnosis training.

In our classes, not only will you learn basic and intermediate levels of hypnotism and hypnotherapy, but you will also learn 5-PATH® and 7th Path Self-Hypnosis®.

5-PATH® is a very special form of hypnosis and hypnotherapy that is systematic in its approach to working with a variety of issues for which hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been found to be effective.  In addition to having received international acclaim, it is also the very first form of hypnotherapy to have ever been recognized as a Special Interest Group by the National Guild of Hypnotists, the world’s largest hypnosis organization.

7th Path Self-Hypnosis®, is the very first mind-body-spirit self-hypnosis program that deals directly with both limiting beliefs, and emotional factors that get in the way of personal success.  It is a kind of insight process that removes blockages that the practitioner may not even have been aware of.  It has been called the “very first antivirus software program for the human mind” because those blockages limit your ability to function at your highest level and reach your goals and potential in life.

With that, I look forward to reading the posts that will soon be published here.  Please leave your comments below.

Let’s do great things together!
